What Do I Do If I Suspect Abuse?

What to do if you Suspect Nursing Home Abuse has Occurred or is Occurring

The Illinois Department of Public Health operates a hotline at 847.244.0111. Callers to the hotline are able to file a complaint in matters of suspected nursing home abuse or neglect. The caller is not required to give his or her name or address. However, if the caller chooses to provide his/her name and address, a copy of the final report of the IDPH will be forwarded to that caller. The department will initiate an investigation after receiving such a complaint call. Complaints involving life-threatening matter will cause an investigation to be initiated within 24 hours of reception of the complaint. The IDPH will pull the charts of a number of separate residents upon conducting the investigation at the nursing facility. In this way, the IDPH will attempt to protect the identity of the resident whose care is being investigated. If the facility is found to be in violation, the IDPH may revoke the facility’s license, or issue a conditional license to that facility. The nursing home may also be fined by the IDPH as a consequence of the investigation.
